Yesterday evening I attended a choral recital at my grandson’s school. The program was titled, Lady of Liberty, featuring a picture of the statue of Liberty. The program’s theme related to everything in our history that has made us a great nation, attracting, like a huge magnet, the world’s “tired, the poor, the huddled masses, yearning to be free…..”
As passages from our Declaration of Independence and Gettysburg Address were read and patriotic songs were sung, my mind suddenly flashed with the current news of the day. And sadly the revelation came to me that no longer are we the “Land of the free and the Home of the Brave” as the songs sung by these little children depicted. Rather, we have allowed ourselves, gradually over the years, to be morphed into a country of fear, ruled over and governed by nameless powerful bureaucrats, seemingly anonymous and unaccountable to we the people; our Constitution and Bill of Rights under constant attack.
Nazi Germany had its Gestapo, and the old Soviet Union its KGB, both feared and loathed by their entire populations respectively. We have the IRS!
Who reading this doesn’t reflect with a chill of fear any letter showing up in the mailbox with Internal Revenue markings? And now it is revealed that all of us can be the targets of this Draconian institution based on beliefs alone. Words uttered such as patriotic, freedom, and responsible government, can trigger an audit. Who you might donate to can see you branded as an enemy of the state with “appropriate” action taken. And this is just one single institute of our government, amongst uncounted many more, enjoying these or worse enforcement powers.
And folks, we are responsible for this condition. We have voted for it, and we have turned our backs on what has been reaped. We have allowed ourselves to forget our marvelous history, and have been bribed and controlled by “freebies.” And everything that has been done to us, leading up over the years to this sorry condition of near slavery, has been disguised as being for our own good.
Pogo said, and it’s true in our once great country, “I have seen the enemy and it are us!”
