Disabling Comments

Am puzzled as to why certain authors of certain articles disable comments. The story titled “Russians Have Blown the Lid Off 9/11″ is one recent example and the author of this article quite often disables comments on his articles. Why? Could someone explain to me why?
I believe they don’t have enough confidence in their writings so they don’t want to face the consequences. I don’t bother reading anything by LavenderRose or Glen Canady since they disable comments. There’s more but I can’t think of them right now. It’s kind of a shame because most of their articles sound interesting but I refuse to click. Oh well.
Which is really a shame as most education comes in the comments, not the article.
