Oppression happening half away around the world is affecting people in the US. That's the understanding of some participants at last weekend's Denver International Freethought Film Festival. They had just watched “Free China: The Courage to Believe”, a documentary co-produced by NTD with award winning director Michael Perlman. Founder and film festival director Andrea Steele called “Free China” the “best of the fest”. [Andrea Steele, Director, Denver International Freethought Film Festival]: “Well, this year, the best of the fest is your film, 'Free China: The Courage to Believe,' and we selected this because the activism and the human effort that it took for those in the film to challenge something so extreme as the human rights violation of the Chinese government just really, really, embodied what we believe.” The film tells the story of two practitioners of the meditation discipline Falun Gong, who were persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party. Both were tortured and forced to do slave labor on products that ended up in the US. Audience member Jacinto Robles says the film has given him more awareness. [Jacinto Robles, Audience Member]: “I'm surprised this is happening…concerned about why the media in the US is not aware or is not interested in showing this to this country.” “Free China: The Courage to Believe” highlights the issue of organ harvesting.
