Description: Dramatic scenes as NY police rescue 6 people by helicopter… Full Story: Dramatic scenes as New York Police airlift 6 people, including one child, from the rooftops of flooded homes in Staten Island. Images from Tuesdays' rescues were caught on camera and released by the New York Police Department. Battered by a record storm surge of nearly 14 feet of water, whole areas of New York City were submerged under several feet of water. The rescues were carried out by police aboard Helicopter 23, named after the 23 city police officers that were killed on September 11. More than 40 people have been killed as Hurricane Sandy lashes the United States East Coast. After hammering Pennsylvania, the storm is now expected to move north toward western New York and Canada, according to the National Weather Service.
