David George, a former teammate of Lance Armstrong, admits to taking the performance-enhancing drug EPO. He is suspended by his team while investigation is being done. Full story: South African cyclist David George announced on Tuesday that he has tested positive for the banned hormone EPO (Erythropoietin). George had returned a positive sample after an out-of-competition test conducted by the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) in August. He said: “I fully understand the consequences of my admission and will bear the results of this.” “I would like to apologize to my sponsors, who have given me every opportunity to chase a dream, and team mates, for whom I have the utmost respect. I will endeavor to make right where humanly possible.” The hormone EPO increases the red blood-cell count, enabling users to increase their oxygen-carrying capacity and enhance performance. George has been suspended by his Team 360Life. Cycling South Africa (CSA) said: “(We) respect the independence of the SAIDS process and will respect the outcome.” George rode alongside Armstrong in the 1999 and 2000 seasons when the American won the Tour de France as part of the US Postal Service team.
