An Australian miner has taken his love for opera to another level by creating a unique experience for opera lovers in some very unusual settings—many of them underground. The idea for underground opera was unearthed when long-time miner Bruce Edwards was alone one day in a mine. [Bruce Edwards, Miner and Founder of Underground Opera]: “I had a sing and it sounded great. And I thought, if I can sound good down here, imagine what some good singers would be like.” That idea has now become a reality. [Bruce Edwards, Miner and Founder of Underground Opera]: “We actually produce opera concerts around the country and, where we can, we put them underground in mines, tunnels and caves.” So where could you expect to experience an underground opera? [Bruce Edwards, Miner and Founder of Underground Opera]: “Places like the Jenolan Caves in the Blue Mountains in New South Wales or the Capricorn Caves in Rockhampton, which are absolutely beautiful. Or even to the extent of taking an audience 61 meters down a gold mine in Bendigo or Mt Isa.” These operas are not limited to underground settings—they are also performed in other unusual places. [Bruce Edwards, Miner and Founder of Underground Opera]: “Power stations in Ipswich. We have a series opera on the island which we run on Magnetic Island off Townsville.
