Next time you notice some smelly rock washed up on the beach, you might want to take a second look at it in case it is rare, valuable whale vomit. Full Story: A dog walker curious and daring enough to take home a stinky lump of rock found on the beach is on the path to becoming a much richer man. Ken Wilman, whose dog discovered rare whale vomit on Morecambe beach in northwest England, was stunned to learn the unimpressive and smelly rock could be worth up to $150000 USD. [Ken Wilman]: “So as I was walking along (the beach), she (the dog) was messing about with this, I got a bit close, I thought no, it's a big stone, why is she messing with a big stone? Then when I picked it up I thought that's not a stone, then I smelled it.” He was intrigued by the pungent smell of the rock. [Ken Wilman]: “And I got home, I put the internet on and googled whale vomit. Up comes ambergris.” An expert says ambergris is a vital ingredient in the manufacture of perfume and is extremely rare. [Dominic de Vetta, Fragrance Expert]: “The reason why it becomes so valuable is that it starts off with this sticky, liquid, viscous substance, but then overtime the waves, the sunshine, beating down on the sea, the sea salt, these all combine to oxidize the sticky substance into a rock.” Ambergris, nick named “floating gold”, is believed to be a substance found in the digestive systems of sperm whales.
