Iran’s UN envoy accused Israel on Wednesday of plotting and carrying out last week’s suicide bomb attack on a bus in Bulgaria in which five Israeli tourists were killed.

 

Five Israelis were killed when a terrorist blew himself up near a bus that was carrying Israeli tourists in Burgas. Israel accused Iran and Hizbullah of the attack, but Iran has denied the accusations.

 

“It’s amazing that just a few minutes after the terrorist attack, Israeli officials announced that Iran was behind it,” Reuters quoted Iran’s UN Ambassador, Mohammad Khazaee, as having told a UN Security Council debate on the Middle East. “We have never and will not engage in such a despicable attempt on … innocent people.”

 

Khazaee added, “Such terrorist operation could only be planned and carried out by the same regime whose short history is full of state terrorism operations and assassinations aimed implicating others for narrow political gains. I could provide … many examples showing that this regime killed its own citizens and innocent Jewish people during the last couple of decades.”

 

Earlier this week Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu repeated his assertion that Iran and its terrorist proxy Hizbullah are behind the terror attack in Burgas.

 

Netanyahu said his assertion that Hizbullah is behind the attack is based on “rock solid” intelligence and on its resemblance to other recent attempted attacks across the world, included one in Cyprus last week.

 

“It’s the same modus operandi,” he said on Fox News. “It’s them and we know it.”

 

Investigators from the Bulgarian government have reached the same conclusion as Israel. The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry has said that government officials believe the lethal bombing was carried out by Hizbullah, despite the group’s denial of involvement in the attack.

 

Israel’s deputy UN Ambassador Haim Waxman said on Wednesday that Iran’s fingerprints were all over the bomb attack in Bulgaria, as well as dozens of other plots in recent months around the world.

 

“These comments are appalling, but not surprising from the same government that says the 9/11 attack was a conspiracy theory and denies the Holocaust,” Waxman said in a statement quoted by Reuters, responding to the Iranian envoy’s comments.

 

“The time has come for the world to put an end to this campaign of terror, once and for all,” Waxman said.
