“… It is my right to see Safed, but not to live there…” Mahmoud Abbas stated to the Israeli journalist. He went on: “Palestine for me is the 67 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. This is now and forever (he emphasized again): This is now and forever. This is Palestine for me. I am a refugee, but I am living in Ramallah, I believe that West Bank and Gaza is Palestine, and the other parts is Israel.”
Before I go any further, I must disclose the fact I didn’t exactly vote the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) chairman, or the PLO itself as man/organization of the year. That said, I’m still not going to hammer them too much. Just go and ask any Palestinian who’s not affiliated with these “has beens” and they’ll tell you that their corrupted, let’s-bend-over loser mentality represents everything that is wrong in our culture. They are becoming more and more irrelevant, and they don’t represent Palestinians anymore: Not 48ers, and certainly not refugees. Zoheir Andreus wrote a fantastic article in Haaretz (9/11/2012) in which he revealed Abbas had already given away (in an interview) our God given right to exercise our refugees’ return to their lands in occupied Palestine (Israel). This was in August 2000, 2 months before the greatest celebration in the last 2 decades (A.K.A: the 2nd Intifada) began. So no need to waste any time on analyzing a miserable saying by the leader of this good for nothing political party from the ARAB point of view (since more worthy people had already done this), but from the ISRAELI’S.
A quick run down on the conflict will tell you wars have always started while left-wingers were in charge in Israel, so as almost every major catastrophic event to both people. Any social-political activist in Israel will tell you real universal left almost doesn’t exist in Israel, and the only form of left Israelis are familiar with is the Zionist one-which is basically the same, except for small, minor differences. Like killing Arabs.
I found it extremely easy to tell who was a real left wing person and who was a fake one (again, Zionist left) by what they thought of the not so heart warming declaration by Abbas. While my humanitarian, justice seeking Israeli friends were absolutely appalled and criticized the chairman no one elected, the others, led by Nobel peace prize winner Shimon Peres hailed the courageous, sole representative of all Palestinian people (as long as they’re not from Gaza, 48’, refugee camps abroad and basically anywhere that’s not Ramallah), and probably the star of the next Dark Knight saga, chairman Abbas.
“He proved to be a partner”, “Palestinians are lucky to have him”, these are few of the headlines supposedly left-wing political analysts and Parliament members wrote. And what did the Israeli right wing do? Again, these guys never fail to deliver! I’m actually finding myself considering voting for the next candidate that wants to wipe Arabs from the face of the earth. Yes, this is how much I appreciate honesty.
When you’re up facing Israeli right, you can always tell where they stand and what do they really think. They totally dismissed Abbas’ declaration, providing the Palestinians with a great push to get rid of his demented leadership. But far more important, they revealed Zionist left to be a real stick in the wheels of this conflict. While universal left aspires for justice and amending historical wrongs, just because they’re wrong doings, Zionist left ideology asks “what’s in it for me?” They don’t want to help Palestinians because they’re discriminated, they want to improve their situation while maintaining their plateau state of being, enough so they wouldn’t fire back rockets or bomb their buses. They’d rather solve refugees’ problem by somehow keeping them abroad and deny their return, embrace shameful statements by an irrelevant leader with sheer confidence and optimism and knowingly overlook real Palestinian aspirations, while believing they know what’s right for them (hint- it’s always what’s best for the Israelis).
Israeli left, which is small to begin with and steadily decreasing, consists of more than 90% of Zionists (according to Israeli parliament members). The other 10% are unfortunately a drop in the ocean and are just insufficient to start the wind of change.
That’s why I’d prefer Netanyahu to Peres in any given day. I’d take the guy who can’t stand the sight of me over the guy who smiles, talks about peace but acts against it behind the curtains. The rise of the Israeli Fascist right wing is of course not good for both peoples, but it’s less dangerous than Israeli left. The renouncement of the declaration vs. the acceptance of it is merely another good example.
