“Likud Beteno” the address for the near future of Israel
“Likud Beteno” is the name of the coalition that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu formed with “Israeli Beteno” that is headed by extreme right Israeli leader Avigdor Liberman. The meaning is that the “Likud” and “Israel Beteno” parties will be running the next elections together. Such a coalition assures that the Israeli right will win the elections and form a government that is more towards the right than the current one.
While looking at the center and the left in Israel today, one can easily notice that there is no center at all and a weak left that is facing a lot of difficulties to come back into the picture. Sheli Yachimovich who is heading the “Labor” party is proposing an extreme political stand that is not different at all from Netanyahu’s position when talking about the Palestinians and peace process. The Israeli public opinion showed in the last polls that were published by the Haaretz that it is ready to allow an apartheid regime within Israel and wants to get rid of the Palestinians who are living today in the 1948 lands. Even Israelis who are active to develop the social situation in Israel are still disconnected from the reality that surrounds them because of their refusal to consider the current political situation and the Palestinian case when talking about the Israeli economy and how most of Israel’s budget is spent on security.
The picture is not encouraging and the near future seems to be darker especially that the next Israeli government would be lead by Netanyahu and an extreme defense minister; Avigdor Liebermann. Advisors at Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu office stated yesterday at a show that the Israeli television broadcasts that President Abbas decision to go the United Nations to demand the recognition of a Palestinian state is more dangerous than the Iranian threat. Not only that but the advisors stated that Avigdor Liebermann who is now heading the Israeli foreign affairs ministry ordered his teams to launch an International campaign that targets Abbas and the Palestinian Authority to prevent them from getting the United Nations recognition.
If getting a symbolic recognition of a Palestinian state at the United Nations is considered more dangerous than the “Iranian threat” by the Israelis, then where can we see a chance for the success of the political process with the current Israeli leadership? This leadership is completely convinced that the Palestinians must not get a state of their own and it is applying Netanyahu’s strategy that is only about directing the conflict and giving the Palestinians a kind of an unrecognized “Autonomy” that spares Israel from taking responsibility of its occupation of the Palestinian lands. In such a situation the best choice that the Palestinians have in addition to their decision to go the United Nations is to immediately hold elections for the Palestinian National Council that gives all the Palestinians their right in deciding the strategy they want in facing the Israeli refusal to end the conflict in the next stage. Such a step will let the people choose what they want to choose including the formation of the leadership that they want to lead them. In addition to that the Palestinians must be careful and stay away from making dangerous steps such as the establishment of a temporary state or strengthening the division between Gaza and the West Bank.
A “Likud Beteno” future of Israel request a complete revision of the current Palestinian strategy if it exists and an immediate movement towards a Palestinian Unity that can face serious threats that the Palestinian people will be facing soon.
