Hizb Expands Missile Arsenal
TEL AVIV [MENL] — Hizbullah has continued to expand its missile and rocket
arsenal.
Israel’s intelligence community has determined that the
Iranian-sponsored proxy amassed more than 100,000 missile and rockets. The
community was said to have tracked the arrival of advanced Russian weapons
including the P-800 cruise missile, with a range of 300 kilometers.
“They are determined to continue building its forces against us,” Amos
Gilad, a senior Israeli defense official, said.
Gilad, director of the Defense Ministry’s political-military bureau,
said Hizbullah was focusing on developing its anti-ship capabilities. He
said Iran was acquiring a range of weapons from the arsenal of the Syrian
military, including Yakhont cruise missile.
“They can be used against maritime and land targets, but also offshore
gas rigs,” Gilad told Israel’s news website NRG.
Estimates of Hizbullah’s missile and rocket arsenal have varied, but
Western intelligence sources confirmed a steady buildup. In mid-January
2016, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Hizbullah amassed a force of
80,000 missiles and rockets.
In the interview on Dec. 25, 2015, Gilad said Iran has been directing
Hizbullah’s buildup. He cited Maj. Gen. Qassem Suleimani, commander of
Iran’s Quds Force, also responsible for the war against Sunni rebels in
Syria.
“He travels around the Middle East and promotes the affairs of the
Iranian-Shi’ite empire,” Gilad said.
