Reply to an Israeli Former Senior Member of Security Establishment – Let’s
set aside the slogans
Dr. Aaron Lerner 1 January 2017

An Israeli who until recently held a senior key post in the Israeli security
establishment playing an extremely active role in policy and operations
wrote to me that my proposal for maximum autonomy, maximum integration (open
access to engage in commerce in Israel and visit in Israel) and maximum
movement (including that Palestinian passengers should be able to travel via
our airports and seaports with the ease of Israelis) and annexation of Area
C+ with Israeli citizenship for all the Palestinians who resided in Aera C+
was nothing more than “Bantustan like in South Africa at the height of
apartheid.”

I replied:

XXXXX: let’s set aside the slogans.

We have a genuine problem with a sovereign state.

Its a fact that such a sovereignty continues even if it violates
restrictions. I checked with Allan Baker to make sure on this.

The world has demonstrated it is not prepared to devote the resources to
intervene.

The record of the US is clear on this (’67, the Egyptian shift of the SAMs
to the Suez Canal that facilitated the ’73 invasion, etc.).

We ourselves have a miserable record insisting on compliance (“quiet for
quiet” that allows Hamas to make literally any and every preparation for war
as long as it doesn’t shoot)

So beyond slogans what’s the answer.

Shimon Peres and Rabin both were certain at the start of Oslo that autonomy
would suffice.

That voting for a parliament of an autonomy rather than a sovereignty would
not satisfy “self determination” was something for academics to debate.

Let’s honor the Palestinians. If they have a sovereign state they will be
smart enough to collect the allies and develop a plan to destroy us. And
this possibly after bringing in millions more Arabs.

“We knew they had tunnels but didn’t realize what they would do with them”

So it happened.

We as a nation can’t afford “we knew they were getting a sovereign state but
didn’t realize what the Palestinians would do with it”.
