Weekly Commentary: Mr. Netanyahu – Sovereign State is NOT “Just” a Label
Dr. Aaron Lerner 15 February, 2017
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu downplayed the importance of the sovereign
state “label” at his press conference with President Trump, arguing that its
not the “labels” that matter, but instead the terms.
I know he meant “sovereign state”, by the way, because the example that he
gave of a state was the sovereign state of Costa Rica.
Mr. Netanyahu is profoundly wrong.
Because “sovereign state” is much more than just a “label”.
That’s because “sovereignty” trumps “terms”.
Binyamin Netanyahu insists that Israel have overriding security
responsibility for the entire territory from the Jordan River to the
Mediterranean Sea.
Now unless he’s banking on the Palestinians never accepting this requirement
in a deal then Mr. Netanyahu has to make sure that conditions never arise
after a deal is made that make possible for Israel to no longer have this
critical security control.
But there is no “iron clad” “water tight” “super duper perfect” deal that
can actually guarantee this condition.
That’s because “sovereignty” trumps “terms”.
The day that a sovereign Palestinian state manipulates and/or exploits
local, regional and international conditions to end Israeli security control
Israel security control will end.
And the sovereign Palestinian state will continue to be a sovereign
Palestinian state.
That’s not a “label”, that’s an entity with all kinds of rights and
abilities to pursue the destruction of Israel in ways that an autonomy
simply can’t.
Saying the fundamental truth that a sovereign Palestinian state is a priori
unacceptable to Israel will save all of us a lot of time and also help
secure our futures.
Yes – there’ a “deal” out there to negotiate.
A one sovereign Israeli state with a Palestinian autonomy on steroids
“solution” is choc-a-bloc with issues that need to be hammered out to
arrive at the best possible deal for both Israelis and Palestinians.
