the short story is that the EPA wanted to test the exhaust of aircraft, and the brake dust from them too, so they needed a car with a high speed ability that could keep up. A 200 mph car that was affordable? Superbird of course. They added measuring equipment in the trunk, and a aircraft to car radio above the ashtray, and only used it for 10,000 miles and less than 9 years before it went to auction.

It was more about noise and that they needed a car that wouldn’t be blown way.
Only the Superbird would work for their budget&needs.
The originator of the pattern,
the Dodge Daytona was a better car aerodynamically,
but there were only 503 of thousand built
but because of a long story, there were almost 2000 ‘Birds built the year after.
They were so overstocked for then-conservative automotive America that some had their nodes and Tails cut off and were converted back to Roadrunners.
The car has been restored,
of course.
It was pretty rough after years of neglect.
What a deal,though!
