According to an interview with Top Gear, Toyota is considering using a KERS-like hybrid system for the future high-performance FR-S/86. Chief Toyota GT 86 engineer Tetsuya Tada revealed that the car might borrow some tech from the TS030 Hybrid Le Mans prototype. It’s not just ethereal musing either, they’re actually testing a car right now. A power-burst that regenerates would be quite fun, and this car could use the help in straight line jogs, and pulling out of corners.
But, is that better than a turbo? Tada-san thinks so. On the BRZ’s future turbo power-plant, he said, “I think 300 bhp (224 kW) with a turbo and 200 g/km of CO2 would be tasteless in this day and age. And a turbo would mean the loss of the GT 86′s uniqueness.”
Tasteless might be over-stating it, but from the company that spawned the Prius, and in light of recent holy-shitballs weather catastrophes, I understand his point. Obviously, a turbo BRZ/FR-S would be really, really fun. And what’s more important, my grand kid’s survival, or me having fun? A hybrid might be the responsible, forward-thinking way to go, but turbo RWD is turbo RWD. From a day-dreaming standpoint, it wins.
As cool as a KERS system would be, I think I prefer the anytime power (as opposed to button-activated) that a turbo provides. But who knows? If the KERS system is seamless, and has good duration, while increasing the MPG, I might be drawn to the responsible side of the 86 empire. But I want to hear from you: which do you want to see? Which would you buy, and why?
