Tesla continues to streamline Model S and Model X production processes
In keeping with goals to streamline vehicle production, Tesla has removed the ability to select headliner color, seat color and interior trim, on an individual basis, from its online Design Studio. Instead, the California-based electric car company has created interior bundle sets for both the Model S and Model X, making the list of available options across both vehicles identical.
As we first reported, Tesla began bundling interior options on the Model X back in November of last year though buyers of the Model S were still able pick from over fifty unique interior combinations. However, when Tesla made an update to its online Design Studio last night to introduce its 335-mile long range 100D, the company also quietly introduced the same Model X interior bundle set to the Model S. The update is seen as a move aimed at increasing production efficiency by creating the same set of options regardless of vehicle.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk made it clear last year during the Gigafactory Grand Opening party that the company was focused on streamlining production processes which also involves “building the machine that builds the machine”. The company released a video showing mass production of its newest high-energy-density 2170 lithium-ion battery cell taking place at the $5 billion Gigafactory facility. The battery cells will are being produced in conjunction Panasonic and will be used in the upcoming Model 3.
Beyond the bundling of vehicle options, Tesla has also been removing options from its online Design Studio. Tesla discontinued the P90D from the Model S and Model X lineup shortly after it introduced the P100D, which uses a performance version of its 100 kWh battery pack. The company also reduced the number of paint colors made available on its fleet, eliminated the coil spring option from the Model X, and removed the 60 kWh battery pack option from the electric SUV.
