Unlike: Tenants Fume Over Apartment Complex’s New Facebook Lease Addendum
The erosion of privacy for individuals continues, with bits and pieces being torn away on a daily basis. Our movements and images are constantly being caught on video cameras placed all around us. And every form you are asked to fill out requires all levels of personal information be shared.

In an unusual and unexpected move, the City Park Apartment complex in Salt Lake City, Utah, has added a Facebook addendum to the lease of each tenant. The taped page appeared on each tenant’s door late 26 May 2016.
The words of the addendum are quite clear. Tenants have five days to FRIEND the City Park Apartment complex’s Facebook page or the tenant will be in breach of their lease. Along with the mandated FRIEND, tenants are also asked to give up rights to tenant images and the images of a tenant’s visitors, all so the City Park Apartment complex can use them on the complex’s Facebook page.
The Internet is buzzing about this new threat to an individual’s privacy, concern focused on the requirement of personal images for use on the City Park Apartment complex’s Facebook page. And the legal aspect of the document is also being discussed.
What if a tenant does not have a Facebook page, or has been banned for life by Facebook? Will a tenant get a pass on signing the addendum, or will the tenant be forced to move? And the same question arises for new prospective tenants. No Facebook, no application?
Along with the erosion of privacy, an individual’s freedom of speech is also being chipped away daily. The words we place on the Internet are often removed because someone did not agree with our thoughts or the topic of the story violated some policy on a site, like Facebook or Twitter.
