It has been more than a year now since President Obama took his oath of office. It was a time of jubilance, hopes and dreams fulfilled; of high expectations and of course corrections. President Obama, it was said, represented a clean slate on which Americans inserted their goals, dreams and aspirations. Five days before the election then candidate Obama gave a speech where he said “…we are five days away from fundamentally changing America.” The crowd roared, clapped and shouted in agreement. I, for one, looked at my wife and said “what does he mean by that.” Obviously, Obama was looking to do something different if he was elected. The question was, what? Would he adopt sound economic principles to make some basic, nuts and bolt changes that would add muscle to our economy and set it on a corrective course of long term success? Or, would he make vast sweeping changes resulting in a completely new unrecognizable America? In other words, would Obama be a mechanic or a sculptor?
Many people who heard the candidate’s comments imposed many different ideas about what Obama meant by his “fundamental change” statement. We all knew that with a faltering economy something significant was needed. Sadly, had the public known more about then candidate Obama’s background they might have had a better sense of what was about to happen. Most conservatives knew that with the election of Barack Obama the country was in for something that it had never seen before.
To the “uninformed or deniers” (i.e. those who refused to listen to town criers Sean, Glen, Rush, Mark and others who were shouting from the roof tops about Obama’s past background) Obama represented a fresh new approach to solving major issues facing the United States. Through a skillfully orchestrated campaign the Obama campaign staff was able to create a public perception of candidate Obama as a “repairman”, the guy who would be swept into office and then use basic sound economic principles to develop and implement thoughtful and carefully crafted policies. These policies would fix the economy, schools, international relations and financial institutions, to name a few. The operative word here is “fix”, something that a good repairman would do. I think what Obama has been doing to our nation, however, is more like that of an uninspired, unskilled sculptor. Obama has set out to reduce to rubble a 200 year old slightly broken master piece (i.e. the U.S.) in order that he might use his limited skills to create his vision of perfection. Let me explain.
