Purpose of a National Welfare Program

(Before It's News)

The current nanny state approach to helping people is really hurting them more than helping them.  A new National Welfare Program needs to be instituted.  The primary purposes of a National Welfare Program should be to help citizens become self-reliant, to care for the poor and needy, and to give service.

A National Welfare Program should include a system under which the curse of idleness would be eliminated, the evils of the dole abolished, and independence, industry, thrift, and self-respect be once again established amongst our citizens.  The aim of the National Welfare Program should be to help the people to help themselves.  Work should be re-enthroned  as the ruling principle in the lives of our citizens.

Therefore, the size of government should be cut in half.  The government should stop creating more civil service positions.  Instead, the money should be used to assist small businesses to create jobs and hire people. Above all, regulations must be drastically reduced to facilitate job growth instead of hampering growth.  All governmental entitlement programs should be abolished.  People should be taught how to stand on their own feet instead of being on the government dole for food stamps, welfare checks, free services of all kinds, and entitlement programs.

Government should teach people how to fish instead of handing them fish on a daily basis ad infinitum.  Government should provide only temporary safety nets until people can get back on their feet.  Providing safety nets that span generations do not develop productive, self-reliant, self-sufficient people.  Developing a citizenry that is dependent upon the state establishes a second-rate population.  All able people should work for what they receive.  If they are not required to work and earn what they receive, they become lazy and slothful.  A perfect example is the no-cost to low-rent housing provided to people by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Let us restructure and transform our country into one that re-enthrones capitalism, free enterprise, free markets, competition, and freedom to maintain life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  The government should mainly provide national defense and security and stop those who desire to take advantage of other people.  The government should prevent monopolies, oligopolies, and crime.  That's it!  The government should stay out of the lives of the citizens.
