(Before It's News)
Among other things, CBO suggested that a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) tax could be tracked by installing electronic equipment on each car to determine how many miles were driven; payment could take place electronically at filling stations.
The White House Office of Management has approved a request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to mandate event data recorders, commonly referred to as “black boxes,” in 100-percent of new vehicles sold.
In the very near future, then, the car you drive may monitor your every action behind the wheel, from speed to steering angle to brake pressure to whether or not you and your front seat passengers are buckled up.
If that makes you paranoid, this won’t help much: if you drive a newer car, chances are there’s already some kind of black box logging your actions, something that most consumers are blissfully unaware of. Today, The Detroit News tells us, 91.6 percent of light-duty autos utilize black boxes, so the latest directive would merely take that to 100 percent.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it will require all new U.S. vehicles to have black boxes by Sept. 1, 2014, noting that 96 percent of 2013 models already come with them standard.
The new proposal does not change the 15 types of data black boxes should record when it senses a crash.
Expect ownership of the data to become a point of concern once the new regulations take effect.
While we may be safe from law enforcement wirelessly accessing data from black boxes (for the near future, anyway), we know one thing for certain: insurance companies aren’t in the business of losing money, and if such data can be used to pad profits, chances are good insurers will find a way to do so.
Much has been said this last week on the controversial black Boxes in new cars. The mainstream media has offer all kinds of reasons that the we should welcome the black boxes.
Everything from The data recorders tracking a number of items, including vehicle speed, whether a driver tried to step on the brakes before a crash, information about engine throttle, air bag readiness before a crash, and whether seat belts were buckled. All these things can clear you name in case of a accident.
But what else could it be used for??
The Obama administration has floated a transportation authorization bill that would require the study and implementation of a plan to tax automobile drivers based on how many miles they drive. Seriously.
Obama’s answer to the fiscal cliff is instilling carbon taxes in America to “help cut the US budget deficit.”
Beginning at $20 per metric ton of carbon dioxide tax, which would be raised 6% annually would be “applied to the Congressional Budget Office’s 2012 baseline, this would halve the fiscal deficit by 2022.” occupycorporatism
Carbon tax credits? Yes Carbon Tax Credits, The Obama administration has floated a transportation authorization bill that would require the study and implementation of a plan to tax automobile drivers based on how many miles they drive.
The plan is a part of the administration’s Transportation Opportunities Act, an undated draft.
News of the draft follows a March Congressional Budget Office report that supported the idea of taxing drivers based on miles driven.

So mainstream media disguises the Black boxes dark side and leeds people to believe it will be good for them.
It will help them prove their innocents if involved in a accident, NHTSA and automakers can make our vehicles and our roadways even safer,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “This proposal will give us the critical insight and information we need to save more lives.”
Those who opt for black box technology will have their insurance premiums based on their actual driving record. This is likely to benefit women, as well as more cautious male drivers, who now won’t be penalised simply because an insurer sees their age and sex and assumes they must be a “boy racer”. But what they don’t tell you is this.
This black box is nothing more than a way to raise revenue for the government. It measures your speed, indicates weather your wearing your seat belt and tracks you with gps, they will know your driving habits, and hours you drive, how much gas you burn.
Then you will begin to be just a means to raise revenue. They will tax you with a carbon tax for how much gas you burn, you could be sent tickets for not wearing your seat belt, speeding tickets.
Have you ever caught yourself driving 35 MPH in a 25 MPH speed zone? Or forgot to buckle your seat belt? Ticket! Revenue!
Then the insurance companies will charge people according to their driving habits, if you drive during rush hour traffic every day in down town New York, you will pay a higher premium than someone who lives in the country and only drives early in the morning when taking care of their farm. This should be very concerning to the American people.
I would love to hear how you feel. Please leave a comment below.

Yeah, there’s no way they’re going to tax people like that. Ownership of the black box data currently resides with the owner of the vehicle and is only going to be used with the owner’s consent after an accident. That isn’t going to change, at least not for a very long time.
Where was that contract when you bought your car? They were not going to use the Patriot Act on American Citizens either, but SWAT kick in doors of innocent people and kill them using no knock warrants that were almost never used before..
HEY! Government already collects a hefty tax at the fuel pumps! A large part of the gasoline or diesel fuel price is TAX! The more miles traveled, the more fuel is burned and more tax collected. The government robbers will never know when enough is enough. After they have taxed us to death, they will rummage through our pockets for every last penney! STOP IT!
This is the socialism that the 51% of the population voted for. GOOD MORNING COMRAD!!!! This is beyond the pale, Orwell never thought of this.
Enough with the taxes already. If the government cannot make ends meet with what they got, then they need to get it from somewhere else. We already have enough taxes. If the budget is coming up short, they should get it from the military budget. How stupid can these people be? All they can think of are ways to keep nickel and dime-ing the American Taxpayer. We should tax Congress every time they think up a new tax. Why is Congress a full time job with benefits and a pension? Do they even work full time? We have more than enough laws. It seems all they’re doing is coming up with new taxes. We don’t need Congress working full-time on that. They can’t balance the budget. Black Box. VMT tax. That’s stupid. Forget it.
Progressive Car Ins already implemented a box in your car for a small discount. All Insurance Companies can kiss my ass. They say they loose billions in Insurance FRAUD and need to raise the rates. But they make BILLIONS in return with insurance increases. I say keep your old car and tell them to kiss your ass! Regardless of your credit or any other factor, they are the BIGGEST THIEVES along with the BANKSTERS
so if they tax it will that mean they will reduce taxes elsewhere? i don’t believe this has anything to do with needing mor emoney it is about agenda 21, if you tax it you get less of it and if you tax driving enough people will stop doing it, that is the idea taxes are not about revenue, people need to stop thinking in those terms. it isabout control, it is to make you do or not do. they just use the we need money routine to get support as if we don’t need our own money more than they do.
