Faced with ISIS terrorists rapidly overtaking Iraq; with illegal aliens, including thousands of children, streaming across the Rio Grande and into Texas; with an IRS besmirched by proof of unlawful discrimination against conservative groups and even Senator Charles Grassley; with Syria and the Ukraine falling apart in the absence of any coherent U.S. strategy; with a Veterans Administration that is a disgraceful basket case; with a Benghazi terror cover-up scandal that will not die; with EPA and the BLM the subject of severe rebuke for abuses and scandal; with his release of 5 hardened Al Qaeda terrorists in exchange for a soldier charged with desertion; and with Obamacare marginalizing health care and leaving broken his promise that if you like your health care plan you can keep it and if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor, President Obama is doing, well, nothing.

The President has gone AWOL. He is largely cloistered in the White House and out of contact with Congress and out of touch with the American people. He is making few, if any, substantive decisions on the most pressing issues. He has burned all of the important bridges since 2008 and has no strong allies in Congress (none that trust him or can be counted upon to remain loyal to him). He is considered duplicitous not only by Republicans but also by leading Democrats. And, worst of all for Obama, he has through indecision and a void of leadership lost his mandate to govern. Some 53% of Americans disapprove of the President’s handling of his office and his popularity rating has dropped to 41%.

It is extraordinary that a President faced with so many scandals and threats to the nation would abandon leadership and resign through quietude fully two years before the end of his term, yet that is precisely what Obama is doing. It is difficult to discern precisely why he has chosen to abandon the duties of his office. Below I offer several independent plausible explanations for what may be driving (or, should I say, not driving) Obama:
