Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani finds himself making quite a few headlines for his unflinching criticism of President Obama. Speaking out against Obama is nothing new for Giuliani, but what he said at a private fundraiser Wednesday night, as well as his comments on Fox News this morning, are drawing a lot of attention.
Politico reported on Giuliani’s remarks at a New York event featuring Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, a likely 2016 Republican presidential contender.
Saying that the former mayor “went straight for the jugular,” Politico quoted Giuliani as questioning whether Barack Obama loves America:
“I do not believe, and I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I do not believe that the president loves America.
He doesn’t love you. And he doesn’t love me. He wasn’t brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up through love of this country.”
On “Fox and Friends” Thursday morning, Giuliani didn’t walk back that harsh assertion, but he did soften the blow a bit by saying he wasn’t questioning the president’s patriotism. Giuliani explained that offered that observation because he rarely hears President Obama do what his predecessors often did — express a love for America.
