Barack Obama’s legacy is not only one of scandal, dramatic expansion of federal bureaucracy, wasteful spending, and unconstitutional assumption of legislative power, it is also one of deliberate retreat from superpower status and disavowal of historic promises of support to allied nations. With that retreat comes grave dangers for Americans, stemming from increased risks of terrorism, destabilization of markets at home and abroad, and military expansion by foreign powers that view the United States as an enemy, like China and Russia.

Whether it is apologizing for American power, defunding and delimiting essential military operations, conceding nuclear weapons to Iran, failing to support our staunchest Middle Eastern ally, Israel, backing down from presenting any opposition to Russian expansion into the Ukraine, destroying the free enterprise engine of upward mobility through a combination of over taxation and over regulation, or refusing to unleash the full weight of American military power against ISIS, Barack Obama has caused the United States to retreat from the international stage, abandoning its vital interests and inviting other powers, like China and Russia, to fill the vacuum.

When the United States fails to combat effectively even those who are dedicated to our nation’s destruction, that profound withdrawal from self-defense is a cause of remark around the world and an invitation for powers that oppose us to make bold anti-American moves that they otherwise would not. Confident that Obama will pose no serious obstacle to military expansionism, both Russia’s Putin and China’s Jinping now seize the initiative to intimidate neighboring states and modernize and expand their respective militaries. As that regional instability and expansion continues apace, Obama downsizes critical elements of our own military apparatus necessary to maintain parity with our enemies’ rise in power.

The world is comprised of competing states, many antithetical to our Constitution of liberty and our way of life. Rather than view those powers as enemies that must be opposed whenever they act against American interests, Barack Obama has sympathy for them and believes it appropriate for the United States to appease them. Obama is willing to avoid a focus on rights violations, ignore state funding and support of terrorism against the United States, and ignore military expansion into neighboring states allied with the United States in order to curry favor with America’s enemies.
