By Dan Calabrese

Why trouble yourself with the Second Amendment when you don’t even care about basic separation of powers issues? Barack Obama certainly isn’t going to – not when there are guns to grab and he’s pretty confident, probably with good reason, the media won’t call him out for his next round of power abuse.

Want to buy a gun? You’d best move quickly. Very quickly:

Advisers to President Barack Obama reportedly are finalizing a proposal to expand background checks on would-be gun buyers without congressional approval.

The Associated Press reported that White House adviser Valerie Jarrett told a Wednesday night vigil for victims of the 2012 mass shooting in Newtown, Conn. that Obama had asked his team to complete a proposal and submit it for his review “in short order.”

After October’s mass shooting in Roseburg, Ore., Obama said his team was looking for ways to tighten gun laws without a vote in Congress. White House officials have said they’re exploring closing the so-called “gun show loophole” that allows people to buy weapons at gun shows and online without a background check.

Obama has repeatedly called for tighter gun control measures in the wake of mass shooting during his administration. In the wake of last week’s terror attack that killed 14 people in San Bernardino, Calif. Obama called on Congress to approve legislation to keep people on the no-fly list from buying guns. Gun rights advocates oppose the proposal because they say it violates the rights of people who have not been convicted of a crime.

Leaving aside the fact that the Constitution does not empower Obama to make laws all by himself – not that this has ever stopped him before – let’s look at these two particular issues. What the political class calls the “gun show loophole” is merely people exercising their constitutional rights in a setting that frustrates politicians because they can’t figure out a way to interfere with it. Just because there’s freedom goin’ on out there doesn’t mean something has to be done about it.

As for this business with the no-fly list, that has the potential to become one of the most insipid government power grabs ever seen. That’s because people end up on the list strictly at the government’s own discretion. It’s fine for you to argue that only suspected terrorists are on the list now, although there’s at least anecdotal evidence that’s not true. But tie it to gun rights and see what kind of abuses start. This is the same administration that used the IRS to target conservative nonprofit groups. You seriously think they wouldn’t use the no-fly list to keep guns out of people’s hands?

But all of this should be a non-starter anyway because Obama has no business doing it without Congress – and Obama and Congress have no business doing it together because of the Second Amendment.

This is all fed by a line of thinking – absolutely embraced in the Democratic Party and almost unanimous within the news media – that it’s just too darn easy for people to get guns. To them, it’s a given that it should be as hard as possible, and they bellyache about it constantly. The public clearly disagrees, which led to the following hilarious passage in the AP’s story on this:

However, despite repeatedly calls for gun control by Democrats at the state and federal level, gun sales have repeatedly spiked after mass shooting incidents.

Leaving aside the awkward sentence structure there (adverbs cannot do the work of adjectives, AP!), can anyone be surprised gun sales are spiking “despite repeatedly calls for gun control by Democrats”? People don’t agree with Democrats. They want to protect themselves and they want to acquire the means by which to do it. So, no, getting a gun should not be made harder. It should be as simple and unobstructed as possible. It’s a constitutional right, and while we all know Obama doesn’t care much for the Constitution, it might surprise him and his media mouthpieces to learn that the rest of the country still does.
