The Sequester was something President Obama supported before he lied and said otherwise. But it was always a trap to force the Republicans to make themselves look badly. With those mandatory cuts just around the corner, we’re already hearing about how the poor will be hurt, the economy will get worse, and airline flights will be cancelled. Republicans are apparently losing the PR war and the Liberal media isn’t providing any quarter.
The entire thing, however, is a sham and it’s simply one of the best examples as to why our nation appears to be doomed.
The sequester was meant to put a Sword of Damocles over our elected officials’ heads and force them to borrow and spend our money responsibly. Essentially, the sequester cuts money from social and defense programs unless a budget compromise is reached.
Hint: The U.S. Government is still operating under the G.W. Bush budget as the Democrat-controlled U.S. Senate has never passed a budget and sent it to President Obama’s desk for signature.
But the sequester was set up to make Republicans look badly since few people are going to cry if the Pentagon doesn’t get a new fighter plane but if Little Johnny’s school lunch program is cut guess who is to blame?
The sequester is all about fraud because even though programs may get their funding levels cut, none are actually eliminated. You read that correctly. So if a program gets its funding cut by 50% it’s a simple matter to restore that money at a later date.
So the “savings” is simply a shell game meant to give the appearance of reform without actually accomplishing that goal.
President Obama wants taxes raised and tax “loopholes” cut. Democrats on the Hill, who are more on the front lines, also generally come down on the side of tax increases (after all, a small percentage of the public would supposedly pay them). Republicans, predictably, are more in favor of tax credits to stimulate the economy and investment and cutting discretionary spending.
Remember, the ultimate goal of Democrats is to grow the size of Government and the best way they see to do this is to increase taxes. Taking more money from Americans not only allows Government to spend more but it also allows them to re-distribute wealth and, during a time of economic troubles, it’s the perfect opportunity to place more burdens on people who send their hard earned money into Washington.
The Republicans should never have agreed, back in 2011, to the sequester, because it puts them at a disadvantage since all the president has to do is dim the lights of the Washington Monument and make the GOP look badly in front of the television cameras.
In many ways this is going to be a re-hash of the Government shutdown wars that happened with Bill Clinton was president. Although the Republicans don’t have someone as shameless as Newt Gingrich to play the villain, Democrats will still find a way to make Conservatives look badly.
And we have once again seen the corruption of our media present in this debate. Obama was for the sequester back in 2011 although now he has denied that. Predictably, the media has not called him out on this contradiction and most Americans aren’t going to remember the outcome of budget negotiations from nearly 2 years ago.
The end result is going to be a “win” by the Democrats and and a black eye for the GOP. The loser, once again, will be the American taxpayer.
