It’s been a tough week. The prevailing mood has been serious. I’m tired of it. No longer will I postpone the action comedy masterpiece that was discovered weeks ago.
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen. As always, it is good to have you here for yet another Friday Night Flight and this one is indeed historic. Tonight we are going where we have never gone before. This journey may be filled with peril and it is only proper to warn you in advance of boarding the flight.
Ladies and Gentlemen, tonight we will be making our very first excursion into Korean Cinema.
That’s right… breathe. Take a drink. Settle down. Good. Take a moment to collect yourself.
The name of the movie, roughly translated into English is; My Wife is a Gangster.
Let us continue…
Look, I don’t know how this happened. I was just out on the net, prospecting for gold. I was doing what you expect me to be doing. Then I saw a movie title that I could not resist investigating. So I clicked on it. Who wouldn’t have clicked on it if they saw the title? Tell me now so I can call you a Liar. So I gave it the ole Ten Minute Test. Damn those Orientals. They knew exactly what they were doing. It was at the last Ten Seconds of the Ten Minute Test that they set the hook and reeled me in.
Just to be sure I came back the following evening and watched another Ten Minutes. Normally I can’t stand a movie with subtitles (with the exception of Yamato, Space Battleship Yamato and The Passion of the Christ) but this movie just cracks me up and I think the subtitles actually make this movie better than if it had been done in English. I am quite sure that this movie is very popular in Korea. Having made it to the 30 minute mark I am now comfortable with this excursion.
There is some really funny stuff in here. Lot’s of profanity but it’s in Korean. The subtitles will not fail you. Because of the storyline sexual content is unavoidable but there is no nudity and is intended for comedic effect, thus passing the tastefulness test.
Okay, I won’t send you forth into this new frontier without further information. A female Korean Mafia Captain (Big Brother) reunites with a Sister she was separated from since early childhood. Her Sister is terminally ill. Big Brother does what she can do to help her and make their remaining time enjoyable. Her Sister tells her that the one thing that she wants to see is her Sister get married. That’s when the fun begins. Do as I did if you are still not convinced. This movie does an excellent job of putting out the basic plot outline in the first Ten Minutes and does so with style. It’s the twists and turns and telling of this tale that maintain the momentum.
Gamja Gusku, Kimchee and Hite Stout will make for excellent accompaniments for tonight’s flight and visit with the Irishmen of the Orient.
Ladies and gentlemen fasten your seat belts. We are cleared for takeoff and it’s gonna be fun.
