Crime and Character in New York and Phoenix
New York and Phoenix demonstrate the difference between people made small by Big Government, and people made large by freedom. Two recent stories are illustrative.
An assault in New York:
A Bronx woman who was being beaten and about to be knifed by her abusive boyfriend desperately pounded on a neighbor’s door and screamed for other residents’ help Sunday — only to be turned away.
The badly injured woman was only saved when cops shot her attacker as he stabbed her in front of them and refused to put down his knife, police and witnesses said.
“Help me! Please help me!’’ the 32-year-old victim screamed, according to neighbor Jaime Vittini, 29, who lives across from the troubled couple’s third-floor apartment on Sedgwick Avenue in Fordham Manor.
“She was knocking hard on my door and crying. She sounded desperate,” Vittini admitted.
But Vittini said her husband would not allow her to open the door during the 4 a.m. violence because he was afraid the other man might have a gun.
So she said she called 911 instead — as did “numerous’’ other neighbors “who heard a female screaming,” a police source said.
If he hadn’t been a total maniac, he would have had plenty of time to escape before police arrived.
Now a carjacking in Phoenix:
Phoenix police say the 29-year-old suspect, whose name is not being released, approached a 66-year-old victim at her home as she pulled into her driveway.
“He asked if he could borrow the phone, she said no because she didn’t know who he was, apparently he grabbed her and threw her out of the car and on the ground,” said Sgt. Tommy Thompson.
According to police, the woman’s neighbors — a married couple — tried to intervene.
The 63-year-old wife opened the passenger side door and when the suspect pulled away, police say she was hit by the car and her head was injured. Her 66-year-old husband, according to detectives, reached for his gun and shot the suspect.
The suspect drove away before crashing in the area of 24th Street and Thomas Road. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital. …
Police say the investigation will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for review, but at this time, the neighbor is not facing any charges in the shooting.
In both stories, the only thing that stops the bad guy is a good guy with a gun. In authoritarian New York, the victim has to wait for the police to arrive. In Phoenix, where constitutional rights are still respected, citizens help uphold law and order, rather than cowering helplessly while the innocent are victimized.
New York is a city of children at the mercy of others; Phoenix is a city of grown and responsible men and women. Liberty entails responsibility, which builds character. The absence of liberty erodes character, resulting in the election of people like Bill de Blasio, who further repress liberty and increase dependence, creating a vicious cycle.
New Yorkers whose character has not been eroded are encouraged to escape liberal rule at the soonest opportunity. Leaving New York for Phoenix 8 years ago was the best move I ever made.
