Florida’s 2016 U.S. Senate Race Will Not Mimic Epic 2010 Contest
It is already mid-October 2015, and none of the Republican candidates in the 2016 Florida U.S. Senate race have yet to distinguish themselves at the heir-apparent to the seat that Senator Marco Rubio currently holds.
This does not mean that the GOP field of candidates is not a viable bunch, just that Floridians do not know who they are, and the current presidential primary race has taken all of the interest away from this important Senate primary race.
In all fairness, when Rubio ran in 2010, he did not have to contend with a presidential election, these guys, Reps. Ron DeSantis (pictured), David Jolly, and Todd Wilcox, as well as Lt. Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera, do.
But even if these candidates didn’t have to compete in a presidential election year, this race would still not be as hotly contested and historic as the David vs. Goliath general election showdown between then-candidate Marco Rubio and former Florida Governor Charlie Crist.
In the latest polling, Jolly leads the group by a few percentage points, but that could all change, if current Florida CFO Jeff Atwater, who has run in and won to statewide elections, decides to jump into the race.
An Atwater Senate candidacy would change the landscape of this race, instantly catapulting him to frontrunner status, if he decides to run.
Earlier this year, an Atwater Senate run was imminent, but at the very last hour, the state’s CFO inexplicably decided that he would not run, opening the door for Lopez-Cantera to run.
