I guess I should count myself lucky that I was busy during the Super Bowl and didn’t pay much attention to the half time show. When Beyonce took the stage, or the field in this case, I looked up and saw her gyrating and went back to what I was doing. So I didn’t pick up on the militant tribute to the Black Panthers and Black Lives Matter. I also didn’t notice the lyrics to the song that’s been celebrated as “empowering.”
So just how empowering is “Formation” to the Black Lives Matter movement? We looked up the whole song, and here are some of our favorite lyrics from the track:
Y’all haters corny with that illuminati mess
Paparazzi, catch my fly, and my cocky fresh…Downright Shakespearean, really.
My daddy Alabama, Momma Louisiana
You mix that negro with that Creole make a Texas bama
I like my baby hair, with baby hair and afros
I like my negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils
Earned all this money but they never take the country out me
I got a hot sauce in my bag, swagBummer, white people. No more Tabasco for you.
It gets even worse. This is what passes for family entertainment these days.
I say they should bring back Janet Jackson, at least her wardrobe malfunction was an honest mistake. The divisive, raunchy Beyonce performance was done with the blessing of the NFL and CBS.
