(Before It's News)

A Muslim religious leader in Nigeria has issued a warning to the government, saying mulled regulations against polygamy would violate the teachings of the Koran and prove an “infringement” of Islam.

A Muslim religious leader in Nigeria is fighting off a government attempt to regulate polygamy and halt forced marriages, saying such proposals are counter to Islamic teachings and allowances given men, as outlined in the Koran.

Aminu Daurawa, the Kano state commandant of Hisbah, a religious police organization, said a proposal from Muhammad Sanusi, emir of Kano, to outlaw forced marriages and crack down on polygamy is counter to Islam and ought to be resisted by followers of the faith, the Religion of Peace reported.

From the news outlet:

“‘Allah position on marriage is sacrosanct as stated in the Holy Quran and any infringement is nullity,’ Daurawa said.

“‘What needs to be done is not enactment of a law that would bar the poor from marrying more than one wife but rather enlightenment on the intricacies of polygamy.

“‘There about 13 criteria to be followed before one qualifies to marry a second wife and this include been just and caring to the wife as been enshrined in the Holy Quran should be strictly followed.’”

As Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch noted: the view is rapidly spreading West.

Spencer wrote:

“Western leaders are staking the future of Europe and North America on the assumption, or hope, that Muslims don’t take the Qur’an literally, particularly passages exhorting believers to kill Infidels (2:191; 4:89; 9:5; 47:4). But again and again we see that the plain meaning of Qur’anic passages are dominant among Muslim exegetes. The Qur’an allows for polygamy (4:3), and Muhammad had multiple wives, and as far as Aminu Daurawa is concerned, that is that.”
