New Bill Promises Jail Time for Officials Promoting ‘Sanctuary Cities’

The latest was Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas, who was apparently prepared to put the hammer down on liberal snowflake city officials who declare themselves “sanctuary cities.” A new Texas bill, which has already passed the Senate, provided for not only de-funding of law-breaking cities but also potential prosecution of their officials.
Conservative Tribune reports,
Abbott expected to sign the bill into law in the next few months and was giving public officials time to consider the consequences of their actions.
“If you have a public official, including a sheriff, who continues to adopt sanctuary city policies after this ban goes into place, they could be criminally prosecuted and themselves wind up in jail. The place they are releasing dangerous criminals from,” he said, according to Fox News.
A likely first candidate for Abbott to make a public example of would be Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez, who has released 50 criminal illegal aliens in the past month alone.
One of those criminals was in jail on a charge of sexually assaulting a child.
Hernandez has been openly defiant of federal authorities and has touted her “sanctuary city” policy. She said on Friday her department’s cooperation with federal requests to flag inmates for possible deportation would be curtailed, according to The Texas Tribune.
Bill author Sen. Charles Perry, a Republican, told CNN that the bill was “the answer to local jurisdictions picking and choosing what laws they enforce. The rule of law matters, and when you have individuals picking and choosing which laws they implement and how they implement those laws, it just perpetuates instability.”
Bottom line: All of our lawmakers take an oath to uphold the law. There is no amendment for “if I agree with it” or “when it suits me.” City and county officials who refuse to arrest and cooperate in the deportation of illegal aliens are themselves breaking the law. It’s called aiding and abetting and is a punishable crime.
