Andrew Gillum Gains Support in Governor Race
Andrew Gillum, Mayor of Tallahassee, is one of the many Democratic gubernatorial candidates, and it was recently announced that he will be the keynote speaker at the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida’s annual conference that will be held March 18th and 19th in the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association in Tampa. The conference will include media and legislative training along with different panels.
The Democratic Progressive Caucus, during the 2016 Presidential election, endorsed Bernie Sanders for President and praised the Tallahassee Mayor by saying that “Mayor Gillum’s leadership on gun safety, education, criminal justice reform, immigration, marriage equality, and making Florida’s economy work for everyone.”
Susan Smith, the DPCF President commented that “Gillum was a charter member when our caucus was founded in 2011, and he participated in our Building the Democratic Bench panel during Leadership Blue last year.” She also added that “We are excited to have the opportunity to introduce Andrew to our new members as he begins his run for governor.”
Gillum is also expected to gain the support from the Service Employees International Union, which is influential in the political world.
Courting the support of Bernie Sanders’ wing of the Democratic Party may come with the support of the Black Lives Matter movement, and detractors argue that it comes with playing the race card. In his run, will Andrew Gillum do so like Florida lawmaker Corrine Brown recently did after she was indicted on 24 fraud charges involving a foundation she established?
Only time will tell.
