AUTHORITIES at Germany’s most iconic cathedral have introduced a “rucksack” ban amid heightened terror threats across the country.

Cologne Cathedral’s leaders have introduced the luggage restrictions so tourists and pilgrims can enter the holy site “without any worries”.
According to Britain’s Foreign Office, there is a “high threat from terrorism” in Germany after a spate of murderous attacks across the country last year.
Europol security experts claim – in the wake of attacks on the Continent – extremists are very likely to strike again in the future.
All EU member states participating in the coalition against ISIS are regarded by the grotesque terror network as “legitimate targets”, according to the european law enforcer.

The stricter security rules, introduced on March 1, mean no-one is allowed to enter the cathedral with a suitcase, travel bag or a rucksack.
ISIS-linked terror attacks have led to tighter security at public events such as Oktoberfest and Karneval, as well as at places where large groups gather.
Gerd Bachner, the dean of the cathedral, said: “From this day we have put a new emphasis on our safety considerations right outside the cathedral.
“The security officials and the Cathedral swiss are not only inside the cathedral, but also in front of it and carrying out security controls at the entrance.
“These can be having a look at a person, it can also mean checking of bags.
“It is controlled so that no-one who has a large suitcase or a big rucksack, or big luggage enters the cathedral.
“Like with planes, handbags are allowed inside, but people with larger backpacks or suitcases must deposit them.”
The cathedral attracts around 20,000 visitors a day and well over 10 per cent enter carrying bags, according to watchman Hans Rogels.
The tightened security measures have, however, caused frustration, with visitors angered having been turned away from the holy site.
One local said: “I only wanted to go up to the Mary alter to light a candle.
“I’ve been living in southern Germany for 50 years now and every time I’ve come back to my old hometown it has been possible to take a suitcase into the cathedral – until today.”
Mr Bachner said he expected the negative reaction and explains it was no easy decision to enforce the ban.
Another visitor, turned away, complained: “I think it’s stupid. It’s going too far when, as a German citizen, I can’t visit our holy places.
“They should at least put in some lockers. They’ve certainly got enough money.”
