The Lamentations of a Supercilious Snob

(Before It's News)

Conan the Barbarian says what is best in life is to crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women. Speaking of lamentations, Charles Peters, founding editor of The Washington Monthly, bleats piteously in The New York Times about Democrats not faring well lately in places like West Virginia:

I am a liberal from West Virginia. That didn’t used to be unusual. I remember when the people of the state were liberal, and what liberalism meant for their lives.

In 2016 a majority of West Virginia’s voters supported Donald J. Trump, and many expressed outright hatred of Barack Obama. But when I was last active in the state’s politics, in 1960, the state was a leader in desegregating schools in response to the Brown v. Board of Education decision.

The key word in that second paragraph is “but,” implying a contrast where there is only a non sequitur. The implication is that if West Virginians resent that Obama openly attempted to destroy the coal industry that is backbone of their state’s economy, it could only be because they are a racist haters and therefore no good.

It is not going to be easy for liberals to win back red states like West Virginia. Rush Limbaugh, Fox News and Donald Trump have been too successful in encouraging ugly feelings like the senseless hatred of Barack Obama. But liberals can start on the road back if they stop wounding themselves, advocate fair play for all, and instead of looking down on Trump voters as a bunch of boobs and bigots, listen to their concerns.

What a second. Didn’t you just call West Virginians boobs and bigots, who let Rush Limbaugh lead them around by the nose, and whose dislike of Obama and his party is grounded not in economic self-interest but in senseless racism?

Even in a piece calling for fellow liberal liberals to stop alienating regular Americans by being such supercilious snobs, they cannot stop being supercilious snobs. That’s why the Democrat Party is going down. Sniveling that people are too racist to vote correctly will not keep this execrable party afloat.
