President Donald Trump on Thursday doubled down on long-running campaign promises to “take care of” the military community and bring necessary reforms to Veterans Affairs.
“I love them,” Trump told reporters with Fox News, of the country’s veterans. “And we wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them and I said we’re going to take care of them. They have not been taken care of properly and it was a big thing.”
Trump vowed David Shulkin, the newly appointed VA secretary, would do a “fantastic job” and that “the results already have been incredible.”
He added: “The VA has not done so well. But we have the best people in the world. We’re going to take care of them.”
Last month, Trump proposed a six percent funding increase for the VA.
The VA, under Barack Obama, was outed as providing subpar care for veterans — care that in some cases led to deaths and serious medical issues.
Too late for my dad who was a WWII vet. Two years ago Hines VA in Chicago starved my dad to death and took away his meds.
