Human civilization and the planet earth as a whole lost a very important philosopher 12 years ago this month. Terrence McKenna was truly one of the most forward-thinking people, vastly ahead of his time. From shamanism and ethnobotany to metaphysics, music, and computer software, McKenna was truly a renaissance man. Here are a few minutes outlining his genius.
Some select quotes:
… civilization is six million people trying to make themselves happy, by standing on each other’s shoulders and kicking each other’s teeth in
… culture is a cult, and if you feel revulsion at the thought of somebody offering to the great carrot, just notice that your own culture is an extremely repressive cult that leads to all kinds of humiliation and degradation, and automatic and unquestioned and unthinking behaviour.
Part of what psychedelics do, is they decondition you from cultural values. This is what makes it such a political hot potato, since all culture is a kind of congame, the most dangerous candy you can hand out is candy that makes people start questioning the rules of the game.
