Interview with Philip Coppens on ‘The Lost Civilization Enigma’
Why do you think our history books have left out so much about these civilizations. Is it just ignorance or a cover up or what do you really think it is?
PC: There is no uniform explanation, except to say that most modern archaeologist will often explain away accounts of our ancestors. We “know better” than to believe these tales right? But Schliemann proved that Troy was fact, not fiction. Science is also extremely reluctant to change the paradigm. It truly doesn’t want to change too much about our understanding of history. Which is sad. And there is also a lot of territorial envy, which is apparent in the saga of the Bosnian Pyramid, which Western archaeologists refuse to investigate, while Eastern European archaeologists have accepted this. In short, all human failings also deprive us from our true past. And that is… sad. People need to realize that history is extremely politicized, though this shouldn’t come as a surprise when we realize how modern history is completely political.
The worst crime, of course, is that historians totally rely on written sources. Well, much if not most of history is not written down; but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Historians argue it is scientific to use only written sources, but I feel we should get our history right, rather than singularly rely on written records. And of course, on a number of occasions, historians try to argue written records away, as in the story of Atlantis.
