Stuart L. Schneider on the ghostly sanctuary of cemeteries
What are your thoughts on the spirits that inhabit cemeteries exactly? Ghosts in limbo or just simply our spirits residing their for the haunt of it?
SS: In my travels around the country and talking to lots of people, I have found that most people don’t go far from home. Some have only been a few towns away from where they grew up. I believe similarly, spirits stay near their body, unless some emotional event has torn them away. I think that ghosts can be more easily found in cemeteries. Also, the time of the year is important. As we approach Halloween, the veil between the living and the dead, past and future is thinner. I capture many more ghosts in the autumn than in winter or summer.
I always find it fascinating when someone sees a ghost dressed in Civil war attire. Why do you think that is exactly? I’ve wondered if its us simply seeing a glimmer from the past in some cases?
SS: I am not sure why a ghost would be dressed at all. It may have to do with the emotional event that caused their death. If they died in battle, maybe they come back in uniform. Most of the ghosts in my photos seem to be free-form vaporous apparitions (without discern able clothing).
