ONE WEEK AfTER STORM
Here we sit now one week after the storm still without power now getting cold and getting dark due to time change very early making life even harder. The power being out would be hard enough as many people did not prepare and are not able to take care of themselves or their families. However many others were prepared with generators and supplies . The problem is we can not travel or get people to family or friends who could take care of them as they did prepare because there is NO gas.
We stand on line with hundreds of other people gas cans in hand for an average of six hours for a rationed amount of gas. You are only able to drive to your local stores for whatever they have or run your generator for a few hours, you cannot stay warm all day or run your refrigeration but for a short time. Next day back on line for a full day for more gas. Some go at 2 or 3 a.m. And stand in the freezing dark in hopes of being in the first hundred in a hope they might get to work or be able to go collect loved ones who have nothing or lost homes . It is a nightmare for far too many.
We have been dealing with this alone and but for a few people have been in good spirits, well mannered and hopeful each day will get better. So far no sign anywhere in the worst areas that anyone can see of FEMA or the RedCross. No Army no help of any kind. Our local power company has gone missing but you do see hard working crews from other states trying to get us up and running.
I have nothing nice at all to say about the current administration so will say nothing at all. I will say not one thing has been done for us. I imagine our devastated shore line of thousands of destroyed houses, some missing, houses just missing as well as many missing people simply does not film as well as lovely strolls on the beach in New Jersey.
The toll of this storm in my area will take months to determine. It will take years to rebuild or demolish the devastation. Thousands of homes lost many people lost forever . It is along the Atlantic Coast line as bad as Kitrina only bigger in area.
My heart hurts when we see what has happened to this Island. My mind fills with anger as we sit day after day ignored with little or no help. We need gas or power soon or a entire new disaster may take place.
We also experienced a few very strange events during this event that I will write about fully once my life returns to normal. Right now I have limited access to the internet and have a friend posting my notes to you on my site for me.
My days now consist of the chores or staying alive as people did long before electricity. I will tell you staying fed, warm, clean and well is a full time job that leaves you exhausted by the end of the day.
We do have some good people who try hard to help the situation. One day while on line for gas a man came walking next to the people standing there surrounded with gas cans at their feet dressed from head to toe like a seven foot bunny rabbit. He simply walked along with his huge ears and bushy tail swinging a big Easter basket. Obviously his Halloween costume he used it to lighten our mood and give us a laugh. Every once in a while he would wiggle his tail and just continued his walk. He made us laugh and it helped pass a miserable time on yet another endless line.
I have damage to my home and property. Once we have power or gas , I dare not hope for both, I will get my home straightened out, buy all new food, do my laundry and start the work to repair the damage. Once all of that has occurred I will try to return to my site to update and write more about the strange events we encountered during this difficult time.
