Hi Paul,
just read about your visit to the Highland Dell in Monte Rio. Wow cool stuff…anyway, I manage a little bar just east of Monte Rio headed back towards Guerneville called George’s Hideaway. The place was once the Montesano train station. We have a schedule of dated July of 1912. The upstairs we believe was once used as a brothel. After the trains stopped running it eventually became Ripken’s Resort for many years, until George Stanford bought it some 45 years ago. I do not know all of the history, but have some old timers that help to put the pieces together. The present owner Angela Stanford is alive but no longer has a hand in the running of the business. She may know more about the transfer of ownerships before her late husband bought the place as well.
We have recently been blessed with a new restauranteur at our little place. In the process of redecorating there have been some instances of blatant spirit intervention. Apparently our spirit, whom we affectionately call “Evelyn” (Evelyn Ripken) did not appreciate a picture of a redheaded cocktail gal that was hung. Our spirit repeatedly knocked it off the wall of the restaurant, and then knocked it off the wall near the bathrooms as well. Debbie (restaurant partner) has taken some pictures of the space that include some pretty decent energy orbs.
I have worked in this building for roughly 12 years, I can honestly say that I feel energy in the place, and it feels female to me. The other bartenders feel energy as well, but male. I have felt sort of freaked out just once while alone there, but for the most part I never feel scared, even upstairs in the old cat house. The upstairs is no longer in use other than a storage area, but one does feel as if you’ve stepped back in time, Gunsmoke comes to mind.
If you plan any return trips back this way, I would love it if you stopped in for a cocktail, we’ll give you the tour. It sure would be fun to find out what you thought about our little place and it’s spirits. You can see pictures of the place on Facebook “Angie’s George’s Hideaway, and also at 3P’s Comfort Food Station.
You can send me email back or phone at 707-869-2455
Thank you,

Hi,
We have a documented ghost at George’s Hideaway. We believe her name is Evelyn Ripkin, a previous owner of this 1890′s building. She isn’t malicious, but she is a prankster. Several of us have had encounters with her. I will attempt to attach photos of her aura / orbs that I captured with my camera when taking pictures of the restaurant after we took over. We’d love to have you take a visit. We’ve had numerous guests “feel” her or “see a peripheral image” while dining. Fun stuff!
