Rev 2: 17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
When I first read this passage I was taken aback and here’s why. Jesus is speaking to John the Revelator on the Isle of Patmos. John has been exiled there, and according to tradition, the reason for this is, he survived being boiled alive in oil. According to the accounts, the oil was heated and he should have died, thus, when the Emperor heard of this he exiled John to the island. http://www.born-again-christian.info/answers/was-the-apostle-john-boiled-in-oil.htm
The above passage is from the book of Revelation. I believe this book had been sealed, until these times, these last days. In other words much of what was written here, almost two thousand years ago, was largely ignored by the church. In fact, in most churches it still is. However, the book is full of prophecy of what will come and in fact, there is a promise of blessing to any one who reads this book! It is the only book in the Bible which has a promise like this.
Rev 1: 3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.
In the verse above (in red) we see two promises and these promises are given to us by Jesus! The first is this: To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, Manna is mentioned in the Book of Exodus, where God miraculously feeds the Children of Israel in the desert with a substance which looked like a coriander seed. http://www.keyway.ca/htm2002/manna.htm
However the manna that Jesus is telling us about here, is something different, for he calls it hidden manna! What is this strange substance that he will give us to eat as a reward? Only those who overcome the trials on the earth, will be given it.
Then the text continues and we read about a white stone that is given to each of us. On this stone is a new name written on it for each of those who receives it. We also see that no one knows this name except the person who receives it. Is this a name which describes who we really are? How will he find the time to give the white stone to everyone? Do we form a line and wait for an audience? I believe He will give it each of us at the same time. Perhaps we will find the stone in our hand and we will instantly know what it is and who has given it to us!
This new name is a secret name shared only between Jesus, and the person who receives it; and this new name, written on a white stone, creates an intimacy, an eternal bond, between Jesus and the one who receives it.
We get a glimpse of the good things to come in this passage; the promise of hidden manna and our new names being written on a white stone, which is part of our inheritance, part of what everlasting (instead of eternal life – I stand corrected, thanks!) life is going to be like. Even so Come Lord Jesus!
