The gates of hell are various locations on the surface of the world that have acquired a legendary reputation for being entrances to the underworld.

Often they are found in regions of unusual geological activity, particularly volcanic areas, or sometimes at lakes, caves or mountains.

Gates to Hell

01. Cape matapan caves - Greece
Located on the southern most tip of the Greek mainland.

02. Hekla - Fjallabaksleið Syðri, Iceland
The stratovolcano known as Hekla, can be found in the southern mountains of Iceland.

03. Fengdu - China
A city of ghosts with close ties to Naraka, the underworld of Chinese mythology City of Ghosts, Chongqing, China.

04. Lacus curtius - Rome, Italy
Lacus Curtius: A preserved landmark in Rome and once believed to serve as an entrance to the underworld.

05. Actuan tunichil muknal - Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, Belize
A cave network located in modern-day Belize, which the Mayans believed was an entrance to their underworld: Xibalba.

06. The gates of guinea - New Orleans, United States
According to Voodoo mythology, the newly dead are sent to a kind of purgatory before travelling to meet their ancestors in the “deep waters.”

07. Pluto’s gate - Denizli Province, Turkey
Pluto’s Gate was discounted for thousands of years as a work of fiction; however, the Ancient Greek site known as Pluto’s Gate, or the “Ploutonion,” has only recently been rediscovered in Turkey.

08. St. Patrick’s purgatory - Lough Derg, Ireland
An entrance to the Hell of Christian scripture. Founded in the 15th century, St Patrick’s Purgatory is a small monastery located on Ireland’s Station Island.

10. The seven gates of hell - Hellam Township, Pennsylvania, United States
A quiet little backwater of York, Pennsylvania, one finds Hellam Township – rumored existence of a gateway to Hell in a nearby forest.

11. Cave of the Sibyl - Naples, Italy
A diabolical portal well-known to the ancient Romans, and first described in writing over 2,000 years ago. A cave with a hundred entrances that led deep beneath the earth.

12. Derweze - Uzbekistan
Derweze, a place called Darvaz, nicknamed by locals “the door to hell.” It’s a semi-underground gas fire that’s been burning nonstop for 35 years.

 

13. Masaya Volcano - Nicaragua
In 1529, Mercedarian Fray Francisco de Bobadilla hauled a cross up the volcano, hoping to exorcise what he believed was the Mouth of Hell. And he wasn’t alone; Friar Toribio Benavente wrote in 1541 that the volcano’s persistent activity must have a supernatural cause and that it must be, “the place from which the condemned are thrown by the demons. 

14. Lake Avernus, Avernus crater - Cumae, Italy

15. The Mayan Cenotes - Mexico
The Maya certainly had some of the most picturesque entrances to the underworld. These natural underground waterways are located in Mexico.

A region filled with volcanic cauldrons located on the remote Shimokita Peninsula of Japan’s Honshu island.

17. Houska Castle - Czech Republic
Houska Castle, located in Blatce, north of Prague in the Czech Republic.

18. Archeron - Greece
The Acheron is a real river that flows through northwest Greece, but it also figures prominently in classical mythology. In Homer’s Odyssey, Circe directs Odysseus to the underworld, telling him that he must find the point where the Acheron meets the Pyriphlegethon and of a branch of Styx.

    You are rewriting thistorical text. . Gate of hades is not. The gates of hell . Gates of hades is at the base of amountain in ancien israel where j – c talked to the apostles about it . Check your ref. before writing anything. :evil:
