Being in my early 20′s I moved out to Estes Park to join a couple of my best buds who had been living there for about 3 and 1 yrs respectively. We had a small group of transplants in town from NY and Fla primarily. My friend who’d been living there for a yr already on his savings was starting to tap out and landed a watchman’s job at the Stanley. The facility was “purchased, controlled or whatever” by a nice guy who had a son about our age. Only met him once or twice yet if I recall the hotel had been closed from some time and this guy was going to renovate it. we had heard stories of the infamous Stanley – the shining – and so on, yet did not really know alot. No internet then . My friend worked there for the spring thru fall if I remember correctly. Point is he was the night guy – the only one there 5 nights a week. I also worked graveyard shift elsewhere in town. 1 night I went to hang out with him for his shift. Was a really flipped out place. There were 4 buildings in a row – Stanley proper, and 3 others. They were connected underneath by tunnels and my bud had to walk the whole place (lock doors-check grounds including underneath) – and basically be a presence there. The hotel was ornate but what I remember was the fireplaces in all the rooms and the tile mosaics on the floor. Backward swastikas in tile and goats head carvings on the mantles. I followed my bud around and we had started rounds on the fourth floor. He had to check all the rooms and lock them up behind himself. We got separated for a cpl minutes as I was checking out a room and when I got out to the hall I didn’t see him. I started walking and kept hearing noises behind me and heard a door close behind me. As I turned to go that way my friend pops out of a room about 3 doors down the other way. I remember being astonished and as i began to tell him about the noises he laughed and said -” yeah 4th floor -ya know something always moving around up here”, At the time it was more weird then creep but as the night past it was like a darkness around the place got thicker. No – I didn’t hear a piano, or see little girls, or anyone walking around, however I’ll never loose the “feeling” from that night even thou time has fogged the details. The Stanley sat nestled at the other side of town and definitely had moments where it looked like some twilight zone mansion that dropped into reality. As the years past I’ve read many stories and seen the vid’s, but I know it was one really freaky place to be from 11 to 7 especially when it was more or less desolate for some time. When I hear people speak about “energy-feelings-presences” at various places I know what they are saying. One thing was certain – the ambiance was not warm-comfy-cozy or safe but felt demonic. Thanks -I know I rambled and said little but the place left a definite impression on me 30 odd years ago. Estes was one bizarre town when one listened.
