SASQUATCH SUMMER: THE BIG ONE THAT GOT AWAY

For nearly 20 years I have been producing my radio program Ground Zero and I have opened the dialogue about the reality of the paranormal and how it surrounds us every day. I have heard stories of alien contact, ghost appearances and of course demonic hauntings where witnesses believe that whatever is haunting them is of a satanic nature.

Earlier in my career I was asked by Chris Flemming a publisher of Unknown Magazine and actor to write a story about Bigfoot. I was reluctant to write it because all I knew about the creature is what I remember from when I used to sit in theaters and watch movies like “SASQUATCH” and “The Mysterious Monsters.” I also remember the various Bigfoot books and of course the highly controversial Patterson-Gimiln film where a female Bigfoot is seen walking towards a wooded thicket.

I told Chris that Bigfoot was sort of a painful subject for me because while he is the most popular of all crypto critters he lacks the sound investigation and fair scrutiny in the scientific community.

Bigfoot has gone from a compelling Native American legend to a side show roadside attraction being used to sell beef jerky.

It was by pure luck that as I was researching Bigfoot for the article I was about to write I had a chance to speak with Lloyd Pye the author of the book “Everything you know is Wrong.”

People take for granted that all species have been identified and so the idea of a great ape species living in North America is an absurdity until the “body of evidence” is exposed to the world. Even if it was exposed, the reality of such a creature could be as mundane as an endangered ape or gorilla that somehow found a way to cross continents and remain elusive from hunters and investigators, only to show up unexpectedly and witnessed by deep woods campers.

The whole idea of new and mysterious species being discovered and categorized is academic to serious researchers who realize that even in recent history animals that were once thought of as products of mythology have suddenly appeared and have been categorized by scientists.

Now that the proof of their existence can be caged up and put on display in a public zoo or laboratory it is common place.

The difficulty in capturing an undeniable picture, video, or even hair or scat samples of the Bigfoot has caused a number of people to dismiss outright the possibility of such a creature existing.

Just weeks ago Time Magazine, The Huffington Post and even the United Kingdom’s guardian were already writing the eulogy for bigfoot as an oxford professor by the name of Bryan Sykes had conducted DNA analyses on alleged Bigfoot hair samples and compared their findings to those of known species of animals.

Sadly most of the samples submitted according to Sykes were from animals as diverse as bears, wolves, raccoons, porcupine, deer, sheep, at least one human, and a cow. There were no samples that proved that there is a new species of ape or monkey that roams the forests of the northwest.

The Guardian headlined its story on the announcement “DNA analysis indicates Bigfoot may be a big fake,” begging the question of what it might take to warrant a headline that Bigfoot is a big fake.

It was also disingenuous because the same week we interviewed Todd Standing who has been met with criticism for his compelling Bigfoot footage of a full faced non blurry blinking Sasquatch. Standing, who has been called a hoaxer by Google has stated that what he has is not fake and that he is willing to challenge Bates and anyone else to a debate and comparison of proof that Bigfoot is real and that the dialogue should be open for scrutiny and not dismissing what evidence he claims to have.

Todd Standing he is in charge of the Sylvanic Bigfoot Project. The Sylvanic Bigfoot Project’s goal is to obtain enough physical evidence to implement government legislation that will ensure the survival of Bigfoot.

As we were discussing with Todd, his experiences and his evidence two Bigfoot sightings were reported in the mainstream news. One was sighted and photographed in Virginia and another was seen in the shadowy trees in Provo Canyon, the area near Robert Redford’s Sundance in the Wasatch national forest.

It certainly is ironic that in a summer of a Bigfoot flap the scientists are ready to call it all fake and other researchers that have gone into the belly of the beast say that the beast is real and that the proof is in their hands.

It is also a huge coincidence that after 50 years of living on this planet I can throw my hat into the ring of those who believe they have seen a bigfoot. In fact my first real sighting of Bigfoot happened this last weekend in Klickitat county Washington at the ECETI ranch near Trout Lake. The ECETI ranch that is owned and operated by James Gilliland is known as an enlightenment retreat where people come from all over the world to see unexplained lights that travel overhead. Some of these strange lights are seen entering into Mount Adams through a portal that lights up when it opens. Gilliland claims that they are alien beam ships and uses the latest technology to differentiate between the anomalous UFOs and satellites that also can be seen.

This year I arrived early to my yearly visit to the ranch and I came with my crew and associates including Larry Overman form the SyFy channel’s “Ghost Mine” and Olav Phillips who is a well known writer and publisher of paranormal stories and conspiracy theory.

We actually were recording footage for our documentary on the Maury Island affair and its various connections, including Kenneth Arnold’s sighting over Mount Rainier of nine flying boomerang shaped craft that eventually disappeared over Mount Adams.

Roger Clooten from Northwest ghost recon and was accompanied by his partner Dina Rush and there were several of my listeners there to view the anonymous lights.

For two nights we were there watching these wonderful lights and we also caught on video the opening of what appears to be an entry way into the mountain where some of these so called craft enter. It was the most fascinating trip and probably the most fulfilling in the many years that I have been to Mount Adams.

Friday night when I decided to turn in, I arrived in my room in the main library and research facility at the ranch. I crawled into my bed and I was trying to fall asleep I heard a strange sound outside my window. It was the sound of strange laughter. It did not sound human. It sounded similar to the hyena, or the laughter of a toy doll. I did not have anything I could use to record the sound and I was very tired and decided that whatever it was it could wait till morning.

I asked around to see if anyone else heard the sounds and one of the workers at the compound Nate said that he believed it was coyotes. I was satisfied with that explanation.

The next night as it was getting late on the ranch Dina, Roger’s partner screamed when she said she saw a shadowy figure in the brush. And whatever the thing was it startled a deer. The deer actually charged at Dina and Roger Claimed the deer was so frightened it jumped over him and took off.

Dina first claimed that what she saw was a bigfoot, we concluded that she was startled by a deer and that the bigfoot explanation may have been the result of hysteria.

The next morning was the morning we were packing up to leave. We all gathered in the library area that had an adjacent kitchen where we were brewing coffee and washing dishes. I was sitting in a rocking chair in the main living area and there was my friend Sarah and another listener Carse sitting on a couch. We were all sipping coffee and talking about the trip home when all of a sudden I saw something peculiar.

I saw something running away from the apple trees and then darting into a pathway that led into the adjacent woods above the camp. Whatever it was it was covered in brown ash hair, very coarse, and reminded me of the character Teen wolf played my Micheal J. Fox. I then immediately blurted out “Bigfoot—Look its Bigfoot!”

No one in the room with me had a camera in fact we were already loading the camera equipment into the cars as we were packing and my camera crew and videographers left the night before. So no one was there to record or snap a picture of whatever it was I saw.

I thought that even if they did get a photo it would be blurry because of the movement and the speed of the creature.

Fortunately Carse a listener was in the building and saw out of the corner of his eye the creature and ran after it. Roger Clooten heard me as well and came forward with his smart phone. The best we could do was provide a video of what appeared to be fresh impressions of what appeared to be left foot impressions of both the ball and heel. The grass where the creature ran was flattened in paces to indicate the stride. The creature must have run and then side stepped to the left to avoid a boulder in order to get away.

As much as it was my first experience where I saw Bigfoot I realized that what we had for proof is not as exciting as a picture of the furry creature. I knew that if I shared the story, it probably would not be believed.

Regardless of the what others might think of me, I finally had a bigfoot experience where what I saw was undeniable. I did my best to provide proof. I am not abigfoot specialist, nor was I even expecting to see the creature at all.

But I did… it looked young, was startled by something and it darted across the path and passed by the doorway where I got my first glance at what looked like a Bigfoot.

I have received tons of harsh and hateful e-mails from people that tell me I am crazy, and that I am creating a make believe story to get attention. Well, I say to them that I really don’t need the attention and the area where I saw this creature is actually one of the hot spots for Bigfoot sightings. The area of Klikitat and Skamania counties in Washington state were recognized 45 years ago as a refuge for Bigfoot. The Skamania County Sasquatch Refuge is actually the closest thing to official government recognition the creature has ever had. In Skamania County it is illegal to kill a Sasquatch.

Skamania County, Washington is nestled in the center of the Columbia River Gorge, which serves as the dividing line between the states of Washington and Oregon. With towering Douglas Furs, and lush, green wilderness, the people of Skamania County have had a long relationship with the outdoors and an even longer relationship with Sasquatch with sightings and encounters going as far back as the legends of the Selahtik Indians.

Native American Indian tribes have talked about these creatures for centuries. White settlers have recorded their presence as well and the stories have continued throughout history.

The natives of the area would report that a band of ape like creatures living in the caves along the Cascade Mountain range, would attack all who passed by.

A Bigfoot flap in 1969 prompted authorities to pass what has become known as The Bigfoot Law, making it a felony to kill Sasquatch. Commissioner Chair Conrad Lundy, Jr., and Prosecuting Attorney Robert Leick signed the ordinance into law. The fact that it was adopted on April 1 did not escape people’s attention.

However, City Commissioners maintained that this wasn’t a gag. “Although this ordinance was adopted on April 1, this is not an April Fool’s Day joke,” Commissioner Lundy told the Skamania County Pioneer at the time, “there is reason to believe that such an animal exists.”

The region was featured prominently in an episode of the 1970’s TV show In Search Of, where the city officials involved maintained the legitimacy of passing such an ordinance.

The ordinance was reviewed by the county and redefined in 1984, reducing the penalties from $10,000 or 5 years in jail, to $1,000 or 1 year in jail, but the revisions also declared Sasquatch as an endangered species living in Skamania County. As Prosecuting Attorney Leick summed up, “I think Sasquatches are at least as important as the spotted owl.”

Skamania County still receives several Sasquatch sightings a year, and has hosted several Sasquatch related festivals in the past.

However I really don’t think that my sighting is anything to write the papers about because I see it as the “big fish” that got away and my story is just one other story that I can tell and people can say it is a hoax or that there wasn’t enough proof.

I fully admit that what I saw was an upright walking young Sasquatch and I did my best to give just a small bit of proof.

I also admit that the proof isn’t as cool as a plaster foot or even a blurry photo of something in the woods but if there ever is a fire built in the woods and we all are kicking back telling our fish stories.. I have the story of the big one that got away and I will have the thrill of saying it was a full bodied young Sasquatch sighted in a place where they are seen all the time.
