In general, British ghosts seem to fall into one of two categories. There are those which might be called traditional or legendaryfamous heroes or unhappy Queens — well known but seldom encountered and the more commonly reported spectres of ordinary folk, though often the story behind their haunting is less wellexplained. They lived and sometimes died in their corner pub or hotels. Here is a few of their non-corporeal antics.
England’s capital has the reputation of being the most haunted capital city in the world, with ghosts that span the centuries and often illuminate dark corners of a brutal past. From those who perished inside England’s most haunted building – The Tower ofLondon – to the tragic victims of the world’s most infamous serial killer, Jack the Ripper, many of the phantoms that roam the capital are an essential part of British history, folklore and legend.
London originated with the Romans, and since their departure between 407 and 410 AD, centuries of demolition and rebuilding have seen the level of its streets rise by between 18 and 28 feet. Millions of people have lived and died here and, in consequence, there is not one square inch of the old city that is not imbued with the memories and experiences of these former citizens. It is this continuity that helps make Haunted London such a fascinating place to explore and discover.
There is an old saying that ghosts only ever appear in places that have known either great happiness or great misery, and the buildings and the haunted streets of London have certainly known both in abundance. London is an amazing city with thousands of years of terrifying stories to tell. There is no better way to find them out than over a pint and a packet of crisps!
