In October, the last film in the Paranormal Activity franchise, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension ,Paranormal Activity 6: The Ghost Dimensionhits theaters. And with its release, the story will officially come to an end. So it’s fitting that the first trailer, which dropped today, is not only expectedly terrifying, but unexpectedly revealing. Because, for the first time ever, we see the demon Toby as he’s terrorizing his victims.
And y’all…
It. Is. Terrifying. Check it out:
You’d think that they’d continue to keep making movies since the franchise is still going strong. But, as Jason Blum has already said, this is to be the last film in the series.
I had the chance to interview Blum recently in preparation for the trailer release. I’ve lightly edited for clarity, but he had some really interesting things to say. The first was to reveal that, from the start, they’d always planned to end the story here:
“Some franchises, you know, they just go on too long. You’ve seen them. But we were confident in ending it with this movie, and in telling the story this way. It was the right time. And, it’s pretty cool, and also pretty unusual, that we announced this would be the last film before its release – and then sticking to that.”
One of the most unusual aspects of the Paranormal Activity series is that, unlike most horror movies about ghosts and hauntings, it’s always chosen to keep the malevolent entity hidden. Often, the monster’s reveal is the most scary moment of any horror film–the sharpened teeth, the rotting visage, the twisted features, the dead-eyed ghoul–but Paranormal Activity has always kept its demon invisible, adding to the realism of the films. But the decision to reveal Toby, Blum said, had always been in the plans, the best possible way to close out the franchise and the logical evolution of the horror. “It was always how we wanted to end it,” Blum said. “We always wanted to finally show him in the last film and answer a lot of the questions about the mythology.”
In the end, the Paranormal Activity films are the best marriage of old-school horror, with its supernatural terrors, and modern fears, with the use of technology all throughout the films. The story being told out of chronological order, while never planned ahead of time, only adds to the horror of the mythology. Looking to the past scares us because it makes us aware of our own mortality; looking into the future is terrifying because we face the unknown. The Paranormal Activity franchise has done a great job on preying upon both of these very human fears throughout its run, and Blum agreed.
