Sunday Bun

What Did Mary Know? On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” John 2: 1-5

I love this story. It’s one of my favorite passages in the Bible. Added to this is Mary’s directive to the steward of the wedding feast: “Do whatever he tells you!”
In my opinion I think and believe Mary knew—at least in part—who Jesus was. There’s almost a hint of humor in that line. “Do whatever He tells you.”
Long before this an angel appeared to Mary and told her she would give birth to Messiah. He also instructed her that she would be “overshadowed” by the Holy Spirit. There was also a prophecy that a sword would pierce her heart—this of course is in reference to the crucifixion. (We’ll talk about this next week.)
So let’s examine why Mary might be saying these words to the steward of the feast.
Mary has been living with the creator of the universe for decades. Joseph has passed away by this time and Jesus is more or less acting as the head of the household. The question is this, and I realize I’m speculating here, as there’s no way to really know what happened in Jesus childhood and adult life.
However, Mary must be basing this statement—Do whatever he tells you—on past experience. In other words, how much did Jesus show of his divinity? What did Mary see? What did Jesus do in the way of miracles?
Perhaps it was just the two of them walking to market and like the scene in The Young Messiah, Jesus heals a dead bird. No one knows this  but the two of them. This story is not found in our Bibles but I think Jesus did things that pointed to his Divinity that only Mary was privy to.
Mary knows that he is Messiah, and she has been visited by angels more than once. Who knows what happened in that household when Jesus was growing up?
That being stated. Mary is confident that Jesus can change the situation. He can create “new wine!”
Most of us know the outcome of the story. The water is changed to wine and it is better than the wine that was served first. This is Jesus’ first miracle. So with that in mind when we hear the prompting of The Spirit of the Living God in our lives we should Do whatever he tells us to do.
Jesus is the creator of this universe. All things were created by Him and without Him nothing that was made was made.
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto your own understanding…
Mary trusted, the steward of the wedding feast trusted and as foolish as Jesus command was—to fill the pots with water—the result was new wine for the wedding feast…. and it was better than the wine that was served first!
Do whatever He tells us to do!
