(Before It's News)

Mainly because women tend to drive less compared to men, it is not surprising that women drivers are charged less for car insurance than their male counterparts. But while women typically pay less for car insurance compared to men, any female motorist would still welcome getting a cheaper auto insurance policy.

If you’re shopping around for cheap car insurance, here are some ways to get even lower insurance premiums:

  • Shop around

One of the best ways to get the lowest price car insurance policy is to compare multiple insurance quotes.  American personal finance website Nerd Wallet says that motorists, regardless of their gender, can save an average of $859 annually on car insurance just by shopping around. In fact, you don’t even have to leave your couch to be able to compare car insurance quotes, as there are websites that you can visit for this purpose.

And even if you are happy with your current insurer, it would still be wise to compare rates every now and then. You may never know it, but your current insurer may no longer have the best deal in town.

2. Ask for discounts

Many insurance firms are willing to give discounts to their policy holders, so don’t hesitate to ask your agent if you are qualified for one. For example, you are qualified for a major discount if you have taken a defensive driving course. You may also get a cheaper insurance if your car has certain features like automatic seatbelts or anti-lock brakes.  Moreover, you can get discounts if you are buying multiple policies from the same insurer.

  •  Make your car safer

Your car will also have an effect on your insurance policy.  Equip it with security devices like immobilizers, alarms, and tracking devices and you’ll get lower premiums. You must also keep your vehicle in a garage at night.

  • Drive smarter

It’s no secret that insurers love insuring drivers with good driving records. So drive smart and you’ll get better insurance rates in the future.

Arguably the easiest way to show the insurer that you are a smart driver is to take a defensive driving course. You will be able to prove to the firm that you know how to avoid accidents.

You must also start to adjust driving habits especially when the roads are rain slicked. Use cruise control when driving on the highways to keep your car speed under the limit.

And avoid using your phone at all times when driving. Most states in the US ban texting and driving.

  • Improve your credit score

Finally, improve your credit score and you will surely qualify for a lower car insurance premium. This tip, however, may not have any effect if you are living in California, Massachusetts, and Hawaii where credit score isn’t taken into consideration in determining a motorist’s insurance policy.

If you are able to follow any of these tips, then you can be assured of lower car insurance rates the next time you apply for one.
