I believe everyone should vote for the candidate that has demonstrated through their actions that their values and principles are the same as the voter. I do not believe that anyone should ever cast a vote for the lesser evil.
That said, I can understand the argument to vote for the lesser evil IF you live in one of the 7 to 10 swing states where a single vote might actually affect the outcome of this presidential election. I would never make that choice, but I can understand why some would to vote for what they perceive as the lesser of two evils IF they live in one of those swing states.
However, in decided states, like Kansas, I believe there is no valid argument for voting for someone who has demonstrated that they do not share your values or principles. When establishment parties and their candidate see that we voters will continue to cast our vote for them regardless of their actions, they see those votes as a sign that we condone their actions.
Conversely, when we vote for a 3rd party candidate who has demonstrated that they share our values and principles, we not only apply pressure on the establishment parties to change their action but we move closer to breaking the shared monopoly of power of the establishment parties. If Libertarian Party Candidate Gary Johnson gets 5% of the nationwide vote, then the Libertarian Party will gain access to matching campaign funding and easier access to the debates in 2016. Gary Johnson has publically committed to seeking the LP nomination again in 2016, so by supporting him this year you begin to set the table for a stronger run in 2016. You begin to set the stage where new ideas of Fiscally Responsibility and Social Acceptance will enter the national debate.
Since the outcome of the election in Kansas is already decided, I believe the only way to make your vote count here is to vote for the person who would best represent you. For me that is Gary Johnson.
In Kansas you won’t have to write in Gary Johnson. Gary Johnson will appear on the Kansas ballots just as he will be most ballots nationwide.
