A 6-year-old boy was suspended from his Maryland elementary school for making a gun gesture with his finger, pointing it at a classmate and saying “pow.”
The Washington Post reports the first grader’s parents are fighting to remove the disciplinary action, which the school said was due to the child making a “threat” to shoot another student in December, from the child’s record.
The school says the child pointed his finger at a female student in his class as if it were a gun and said “pow.” The school says the child had been warned before about similar behavior, but chose to do it anyway.
“We always make sure there is clear conversation with the student and parents about any behaviors that have to change and what the consequences are if that behavior doesn’t change,” Montgomery schools spokesman Dana Tofig told The Washington Post, saying that the suspension was not a knee-jerk reaction to a single incident.
The child was suspended for one day on December 21. His family’s attorney Wednesday filed an appeal, asking that the incident be expunged from the child’s record and arguing the boy never had the intention of shooting anyone.
“He’s skinny and meek,” attorney Robin Ficker said of the boy. “In his words, he was playing.”
Montgomery County school officials will clear the record of a 6-year-old Silver Spring boy for pointing his finger like a gun and saying “pow, ” according to the Washington Post in a follow up article.
Perhaps this boy should be suspended for bio-warfare as he may be spreading cooties.
Kids will be kids. What about cowboys and indians? GI Joe? Gosh, it’s so different here in the UK. Went to my kid’s school Xmas show last month and the teachers did a skit with the principal playing Sherlock Holmes. He came out of the shadows and pointed his fingers like a gun at us, the audience. We all laughed. No big deal. It wasn’t real. Now if he starts pointing his penis at people, then you should start worrying.
As long as he didn’t use a 30 round magazine or have it loaded I don’t see what the problem is.
The loonies are running the asylum!
If this unintelligent teacher (supposedly) had been armed would she have shot the little boy?
I think this teacher needs psychiatric help!
When I was a child we played cops & robbers, cowboys & indians and other similiar games and the killing between classmates didn’t happen, so what’s going on now? I think it’s out of control political correctness, you can’t discipline your kids anymore which has lead to out of control kids with no respect for others or themselves.
Are you people really still attending school four days out from the pagan satanic ritual called christmas? or is there some error in the reported dates.
@xlgmedium No one says you may not discipline your children. Perhaps you meant physically beat children into submission? If you did mean that then how is banning violence a bad thing?
In my own circumstance i used light spanking for shock value up to the time my children started attending school. At this time i figured they were able to reason well enough that violence was redundant. I still made my share of mistakes as a parent but my three all have robust families and or good trades/careers, societal contributors if you will.
What sort of Kool-Ade do they serve in americastan?
Amazing!
The kid learned how to get to stay home from school….and the blind staff missed it!
